What Happens at Your Consultation

At your consultation Dr. Tantawi will ask you about the history of your acne and about the skin care regimens and treatments you have tried. He will do an exam of your skin, discuss your goals and which options he feels would work best for you. A treatment plan for your unique skin condition will be made that will get the results you are desiring.

What is Acne?

Acne is a chronic inflammatory disease of the skin that is caused by pores getting blocked. This causes blackheads, whiteheads, papules, pustules and nodules, due to the sebaceous glands producing too much oil. The pustules become blocked and the oil and bacteria can become infected and create a pus buildup in the pore. Often, after the pustule breaks open it leaves a hole that may turn into a large pore or a scar.

Although there are different theories about what exacerbates acne, there is no medical proof that acne is caused by a poor diet, eating chocolate, or not cleaning your skin properly. Much of acne is hereditary and caused by hormonal changes when you are a teenager, fluctuations during a menstrual period, or after the birth of a baby. Other things that can irritate acne are harsh skin products and environmental irritants.

Caring for Acne

The best way to care for acne and avoid breakouts is to wash your face twice a day with a gentle non-comedogenic cleanser. If you wear makeup you can use oil blotting tissues during the day to help get rid of excess facial oil, and be sure to remove your makeup at night. Avoid using greasy, oily products, and if your hair and scalp is oily it’s best to shampoo it once a day. Don’t pick at your pimples as it will spread bacteria and make your skin more likely to break out even more. Get regular facial treatments from an esthetician to help skin release oil and toxins.

Acne Treatment Plans at Beauty Refined

At Beauty Refined Plastic Surgery we have many treatments available to treat your acne. Depending upon whether your acne is mild or severe, Dr. Tantawi has a program and treatment plan to clear your skin. We offer the following for the treatment of acne:

  • Home Care Products
  • Facials
  • Chemical Peels
  • Microdermabrasion

For milder cases we offer benzoyl peroxide gel to get breakouts under control. For mild to moderate acneDr. Tantawi can prescribe a topical tretinoin (Retin-A) cream which is a proven treatment for acne that helps to stop the production of oil and dry up pimples. An antibiotic such as Doxycycline may be added to the treatment and the combination is often enough to clear up the acne.

For more severe cases of acne Dr. Tantawi uses Photodynamic Therapy (PDT), or the Fotona® Nd:YAG Laser.

With PTD a topical photosensitizing chemical (aminolevulinic acid or Levulan) is put on the skin. Once it is absorbed it is exposed to a blue light which destroys bacteria and hyper pigmented or abnormally reproducing cells.

In treating active and more severe acne, the Fotona® laser protocol is the most effective tool available now to eradicate active blemishes and pimples on your skin. It can be used on the face, neck, back, arms and other parts of the body. It works by using precisely controlled laser light targeted to the exact depth necessary for each spot. The Nd:YAG laser light penetrates the skin to eliminate overactive sebaceous glands, and prevent further inflammation and spreading of bacteria. It’s deep penetration also stimulates collagen remodeling which causes new skin growth. It can also be used to eliminate or soften scarring that is caused by acne.

Treatment of Extreme Acne:

For extreme cases of acne Micro Botox ( Intradermal Botox) can be used. It works by shutting down the sweat and oil glands in the skin and weakening the arrector pili muscle which is what opens the pores. By weakening the muscle, gland and oil production is stopped and inflammation is suppressed, allowing the skin to heal.
