What is a Tummy Tuck?
A tummy tuck, also called an abdominoplasty, is a cosmetic procedure used to flatten the stomach area. This highly sought-after procedure can effectively remove excess skin and fat from your abdominal area after weight loss, or pregnancy. It’s also useful for tightening the muscles in the abdomen that have weakened due to aging. It is not a substitute for weight loss or exercise, and it is best to wait until you are at a stable weight, or finished having children.
What to Expect At Your Tummy Tuck Consultation.
When you come to your consultation, you will need to bring any medical records, medications you are on. and a list of any questions you may have for Dr. Tantawi. He will examine you, and ask what your surgical goals are, as well as what desired results you are expecting. Depending upon your goals you will discuss whether a mini, partial, complete, or circumferential abdominoplasty should be performed. Additionally, liposuction may be recommended to achieve the results you want. If you decide upon the surgery Dr. Tantawi will give you instructions to follow before you are operated on, and set a date for the surgery.
Tummy Tuck Procedure
All procedures are done under general anesthesia in a hospital, so you will be asleep during the operation. Depending upon which tummy tuck procedure was decided upon at your consultation, the surgery can take from 1 to 5 hours. You will need someone to drive you home and stay overnight, until you are feeling well enough to manage on your own.
For a complete abdominoplasty, Dr. Tantawi will make a curved, horizontal cut, from hip to hip, near your pubic hairline, There will also be an incision made around your navel, as it’s necessary to free your navel for the procedure. Skin and fatty tissue will then be lifted from your underlying tissue, and separated, or slack muscle will be stitched as needed. Liposuction may or may not be done at this time.
At the conclusion of surgery, excess skin is trimmed and the navel is repositioned. The incisions are then stitched closed or taped. You may have a drainage tube inserted under your skin, which can be removed in a few days.
Partial or Mini Abdominoplasty
With a partial or mini abdominoplasty the incision is shorter due to having less excess skin. Your navel will not have to be moved, because your skin will be separated between your navel and the incision. You may or may not have a drainage tube.
When you have excess skin and fat in your back area, circumvential abdominoplasty may need to be done along with the stomach. This helps to shape your body from all sides, as it addresses the removal of skin and fat from the hips, and back area. Liposuction may also be done, to give a nice, even contour. and shape to your entire stomach and back.
Tummy Tuck Recovery
Your recovery time will be dependent upon the type of procedure that was performed. It will also depend upon your age, health and how well you take care of yourself after the operation. You will need to follow Dr. Tantawi’s instructions. to be the most comfortable, and have the best outcome.
You will be prescribed medication for pain, and may be given a compression garment to wear. Antibiotics, and an anticoagulant are also prescribed,, to prevent infection and to keep the blood from clotting. You will need to sleep and rest at an angle for the first few days and will need to get up and walk every once in a while to circulate the blood, to prevent blood clots. Having loose, comfortable clothes, and a chair with a handheld shower is also helpful.
It will be difficult to bend or lift and you may tire easily, so you need to have someone stay with you for the first few days. You will be unable to do household chores or strenuous activities and will need to rest and sleep a lot. Dr. Tantawi will show you how to care for your incisions and drainage tubes and will make sure you understand what needs to be done post op.
Most people take a month to start feeling okay again, so taking time off work to heal is important. After that, it may take another two to three months for the swelling and bruising to fade and for you to begin to feel like yourself again.
