Benefits of Eyelid Surgery

The benefits of eyelid surgery are many and varied. Some of the most common reasons you may elect to have the surgery is to improve your appearance, to make it easier to apply eye makeup, or to reduce the symptoms of allergies, or other conditions that affect the eyes. It’s possible that surgery may help to reduce excess skin and muscle in the upper and lower eyelids. This can improve vision, relieve symptoms of double vision, and make the eyes look more alert and youthful.

Other benefits can include:

  • Diminished under eye bags
  • Elimination of dark under eye circles
  • Less fine lines around the eyes
  • Give your eyes a more youthful and rested appearance

Blepharoplasty Procedure

Surgery on the eyelids lasts from 1-2 hours and can be divided into two parts:

Blepharoplasty, is done to remove excess skin and soft tissue of the upper or lower eyelid for enhancing the look of your eyes, or for correcting a cosmetic deformity, It is also done for ptosis repair, if there is significant eyelid drooping, requiring reconstruction of the eyelid muscle.

Blepharoplasty is done under general or local anesthesia. Incisions are made inside the natural skin folds of the upper and lower eyelids, and sometimes along the lash line. The excess tissue is removed, and then the incision is closed with small absorbable sutures.

Ptosis repair, if needed, is performed through an incision made along the natural crease of the upper eyelid. The levator muscle is then repositioned by stitching it to the tarsus connective tissue in the eyelid. This enables you to see better and makes the eyelid more appealing.

During blepharoplasty, the lower eyelids may be treated with laser resurfacing to remove excess fat deposits, which can contribute to puffy bags under the eyes (blepharoptosis), and enhance results. The surgery is usually performed as an outpatient procedure. It may be combined with other facial cosmetic procedures, such as those that improve the appearance of the lower eyelids or face. Dr. Tantawi performs all eyelid procedures, to give you the most natural looking results possible.

Blepharoplasty Recovery

After successful completion of a blepharoplasty procedure, many patients report feeling extremely pleased and satisfied with their new appearance. The upper and lower eyelids appear more open, the eyes less tired-appearing, and the face more youthful looking.

At completion of your surgery, ointment will be applied to protect the stitches and your eyes will be bandaged. There will be some swelling and bruising. You will need to rest with your head elevated for 24 hours and avoid touching or trying to rub your eyes.. It’s best if you can have a friend or relative drive you home and stay with you the first night. Complete recovery takes from 10-14 days,at which time you can return to most of your regular activities.

Dr. Tantawi will give you instructions on how to care for your eyes so you will be as comfortable as possible. Follow-up appointments will be pre-scheduled to make sure you make a complete recovery.

Combining Blepharoplasty With A Facelift

A facelift addresses the look of aging and elasticity, mostly in the middle and lower regions of the face. Tightening is done in the lower eyelid area, cheeks, lip area, chin, and jowls. Often, if there are significant signs of aging, it is recommended that eyelid surgery be done also. This way the overall look of balance, and the benefit of the entire face looking more youthful and rested, can be accomplished. Some patients that elect to have eyelid surgery may benefit from combining it with a facelift, to achieve a more natural and pleasing look.
