What Causes a Weak Chin?
A receding chin can be caused by many factors. You may have been born with one, or as you have aged it could start receding due to loss of volume in your face. Other reasons are an overbite, and a weak jaw can sometimes lead to having a weak chin.
If you were born with a congenital condition you will usually have a weak chin from birth, and can affect your ability to eat or breathe correctly. Conditions such as Down’s Syndrome, Treacher Collins Syndrome and Pierre Robin Syndrome can cause a congenital receding chin. .
Treatment for a Weak Chin
There are several treatments, both surgical and non-surgical. At your consultation, Dr. Tantawi will let you know what is the best recommendation for your particular treatment plan. Below are the options for correcting a weak chin:
Dermal Fillers and Botox
Dermal Fillers are a gel, usually made from hyaluronic acid which is a natural substance made by the body. By injecting the dermal filler into the right areas, your chin can be filled in. Dermal fillers usually last from 12-18 months, and are a wonderful, non-surgical way to address a weak chin.
Liposuction is a treatment where fat is suctioned from your neck, jawline and sometimes your chin. By reducing the fat in these areas, the chin becomes more pronounced. Liposuction is a minimally invasive treatment with little downtime. The procedure is done by Dr. Tantawi, and consists of making a small incision where a calendula is inserted and the fat is suctioned out. The incision is then sutured up. Because the incision is so small, there is no scarring.
A neck lift is a surgical procedure that lifts the skin on your neck and contours and tightens the skin and muscle in the neck area. It can also include liposuction of the fat in the neck, chin and jawline. This results in a more defined, slimmer, neck and jawline, thereby making the chin more prominent. There is a considerably longer downtime with a neck lift. Recovery usually takes 7- 10 days.
Chin augmentation is a surgery where an implant is placed in your chin. With this procedure Dr. Tantawi will make a cut where the lower lip and the gum meet. The skin is then stretched over the implant and the incision is stitched up
Horizontal sliding genioplasty
With this surgery, Dr. Tantawi cuts the bony part of the chin and slides it forward, thus creating a more forward projecting chin. This surgery also allows Dr. Tantawi to make the chin longer. A good option for someone whose chin is receding and too short.
