Breast Augmentation for Palm Desert Patients
Breast augmentation also known as “augmentation mammoplasty” is a procedure that enhances the size and shape of a woman’s breasts. Many women choose to get breast augmentation after they have children, or have breastfed, as the shape and size of their breasts can look deflated and droopy. Breast augmentation restores the shapely contour and size of the breasts so they look beautiful and lifted once again. Other reasons for breast augmentation are dissatisfaction with the shape or size, weight loss, or uneven breasts. Patients state that they feel sexier, more feminine and have more confidence after a breast augmentation procedure.

What is Breast Augmentation?
Breast augmentation is one of the most popular procedures women choose to get done. The surgery involves placing an implant inside your breasts which can make them larger, shaplier, and more lifted. Implants are available in different profiles (sizes) and shapes. The most commonly used breast implants are smooth, round shaped shells, filled with cohesive silicone gel or saline solution. The cohesiveness of the shell ensures that the implant stays intact even when there is movement, similar to breast tissue which does not move much during the breast enlargement process.
Breast Augmentation Procedure
Breast augmentation surgery is a cosmetic procedure that uses either saline or silicone breast implants to increase fullness and restore youthful contours of the breasts.
The procedure is performed under general anesthesia, which means you are asleep during the operation. An incision is made in one of three locations: around or behind the nipple, around the areola (the dark skin surrounding the nipple), or below the fold underneath your breast. Either method may be used depending on what type of implant will be inserted – a traditional implant over the muscle, a subglandular implant resting just under your pec muscles, or a pocket-shaped implant placed just behind your natural tissue, called a submuscular placement.
If a saline filled implant has been chosen Dr. Tantawi will insert the implant through the incision and then it will be filled with the saline liquid. Silicone gel implants are prefilled, and will simply be inserted without the need to fill them. He will then complete the surgery by stitching up the incision, applying adhesive skin tape and applying a bandage dressing.
The entire surgery takes approximately two hours. After the surgery, you will be made comfortable until the anesthesia wears off. You will need to have someone drive you home, and will need someone to help care for you the first day or two after surgery.
Breast Augmentation Recovery
You will experience some pain and swelling following surgery, which can be alleviated with pain medication prescribed by Dr. Tantaw.. You will also likely experience some bruising, which will fade over time. You should be able to return to work within a week or two after surgery, but should avoid strenuous activity, or lifting for several weeks.
Because breast implants are considered “foreign objects,” your body recognizes them as such, so the immune system works overtime to fight off bacteria that may try to invade these new surfaces.
Because of this, it is extremely important for you to stay out of swimming pools or hot tubs, for several weeks after surgery, to avoid introducing potentially harmful organisms into your body through the implant site.
It’s also recommended that you refrain from wearing underwire bras until Dr. Tantawi says it’s okay, because this could cause irritation and increase the risk of infection. It can take several months for your breasts to “settle” and reach their final size and shape. You will need to wear a sports bra for support.
