THE BENEFITS OF RHINOPLASTY
Reshaping of the nose can significantly enhance the appearance of your face. By reducing or enlarging the size, or changing other aesthetic factors, the overall balance is restored to your face. Most patients feel better about their appearance and have more self-confidence after surgery. Here are the most common conditions improved with rhinoplasty:
- Remove humps or depressions
- Change the size of the tip of the nose
- Widen or narrow the shape of the nostrils
- Straightening or narrowing the bridge
- Adjust the angle of the nose
- Opening breathing airways
Deviated Septum
A deviated septum is caused by the thin wall between your nasal passages being off center, making one passage smaller. When it is severe it can reduce airflow making it difficult to breathe, causing nosebleeds, facial pain and snoring. Nasal blockage and congestion can occur when tissues swell. When the septum is deviated Septoplasty surgery is done inside to straighten the wall and remove any blockages to breathing.
Revision of The Nose
Revision rhinoplasty is performed to correct cosmetic abnormalities, or breathing issues that were caused by a previous rhinoplasty. In such cases, it is understandable that you will have some concerns. Dr. Tantawi is highly trained and has the expertise necessary to correct the previous surgery and give you the results you originally wanted.
Whether you are getting rhinoplasty for health reasons, or to improve your appearance, the benefits can really change the way you look and feel.
Rhinoplasty Procedure
There are two types of procedures for rhinoplasty surgery, one is open, the other is closed. Both are performed under sedation or general anesthesia with your utmost comfort in mind. No pain or discomfort will be felt during the surgery. In most cases surgery takes 2 to 3 hours, but can take longer with more complex procedures.
With open rhinoplasty an incision is made in the vertical strip of your nose called the columella. By having the nose more open Dr. Tantawi has complete access to the entire nasal structure. This allows for the skin to be separated from the nasal framework to carefully reshape, add or remove tissue, bone, and cartilage. This method is used if you need more extensive reshaping. Scars are hidden well in the contour of the nose so they are not noticeable.
Closed rhinoplasty is used for more minor adjustments to achieve the desired result. It is performed by going through the nostrils and using small incisions inside the nose. Closed rhinoplasty leaves no external scarring.
With each method the best possible outcome is obtained. Great care is taken to ensure concealment of scarring, optimal recovery, and a short downtime. Dr. Tantawi will determine which procedure is best for your situation at the initial consultation, and answer any questions you may have.
Healing and Recovery After Rhinoplasty
After surgery, you will need to stay a few hours so the anesthesia can wear off. Make sure you plan in advance for a friend or family member to bring you home. A splint is placed on the nose to protect and keep the new shape until it heals, and is usually worn for a week. There will be swelling and sometimes a little bruising around the eyes. You will need to keep your head elevated for the first 24 hours, and you may feel some congestion. Most patients can return to work within a week, although it can take up to two weeks for redness and bruising to completely disappear.
Dr. Tantawi is committed to making sure you have the best recovery possible. He and his staff will ensure that you understand how to care for your nose as it heals. Follow-up appointments are scheduled to facilitate a more comfortable and safe recovery.

The rhinoplasty surgery can take place in the hospital, outpatient surgery center, or our office-based surgical facility. It is performed under anesthesia to ensure your comfort.
