What causes hair loss?
Although there are many myths and theories about what causes hair loss, they have all been disproven. It is now known that hair loss is caused by a combination of a change in hormones, aging, and a family history of baldness. Usually, the earlier baldness begins, the more severe it will be. There are other factors, such as medication and chemotherapy. Learn more about the options Dr. Tantawi has for restoring hair below.
PRP Therapy
PRP therapy is a relatively new treatment for hair loss that involves extracting your blood, processing it to create a platelet-rich plasma (PRP) solution, and then injecting it back into the scalp. Platelet- rich plasma encourages growth factors, increases collagen and stem cells, and heals injuries faster. It helps to promote hair growth by stimulating the growth of new hair follicles and strengthening your existing hair.
When the procedure is done, blood will be drawn (usually from your arm). The blood is put in a centrifuge which separates it into 3 parts, platelet- rich plasma, platelet platelet-poor plasma and red blood cells. The platelet-rich plasma is extracted and the rest is thrown out.
After the plasma has been obtained, a local anesthesia is applied to your scalp, and the plasma is injected into the areas where hair is thinning. The treatment lasts about 30 minutes and you will need several treatments in the beginning. After that Dr. Tantawi will have you in for maintenance appointments. The results are not immediate, it takes a few months to start to see results. PRP Therapy works best for menopausal women, balding men and people who have begun to lose hair within the past 5 years.
PEP Factor
Pep factor is a naturally occurring protein that helps to promote hair growth. It works by stimulating the cells in the hair follicle that are responsible for hair growth. By promoting hair growth, Pep factor can help to restore thinning or balding hair.
Pep factor helps to restore hair by infusing a combination of basic Fibroblast Growth Factor (bFGF) and copper peptides into the scalp. It works by promoting papilla cell reproduction and increases the size of your hair follicles.
The pep factor procedure is performed on a clean scalp that has been numbed with a local anesthetic. The solution is placed on the areas to be treated, and then a micro needling tool is used to help penetrate it into the scalp. You are then placed under Ultra-ReGen LED for 20 minutes.
There is mild discomfort and no downtime with the procedure. Six treatments, one week apart are recommended, however Dr. Tantawi will let you know his recommendation at your consultation.
FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) Hair Transplant
Follicular unit extraction is a hair transplant method that is done by taking single hair follicles from your skin, and moving them to the area where hair is thin or absent. By transplanting the follicles, your hair will look fuller, or hair will grow in places where it was absent. The transplanted hair starts growing back in 3 to 4 months.
One of the benefits of a FUE hair transplant is that because the hair follicles are taken individually, there is very minimal scarring. The results are natural looking and enable you to wear your hair short, unlike the strip method which leaves an unnatural line.
The FUE procedure starts with shaving the area where the follicles will be taken, as well as where it will be transplanted. Dr. Tantawi will use a micro punch tool, to remove follicles from your skin. Tiny incisions will be made in the area where the follicles will be added, and the follicles will be inserted into the incisions. The area will be cleaned and bandaged to avoid infection.
FUE is done as an outpatient procedure, usually in 2-4 hour sessions, over a few days. You will be able to return home after each session. You may have some discomfort and swelling for 3 or 4 days, but recovery is usually quick. Dr. Tanwanit will give you instructions on what to do in the coming weeks after your transplant, so that you can be comfortable and care for the transplant areas.
