What is Rosacea?

Rosacea is an incurable chronic skin disorder that affects more than 16 million people in America alone. It typically begins with redness on the cheeks, nose or chin but it can spread across the entire face including eyelids, lips etc. Since there are many symptoms associated with Rosacea including burning, itching, dryness, as well as swelling around certain areas of the face, many people often mistake it for common skin problems such as acne.

One type of rosacea causes permanent redness to the face along with pimples, red papules, or pustules that itch or burn. This variant is called erythematosus, or ETR. A second form, papulopustular rosacea results in bumps similar to acne but larger. In addition to these two types, one can also get phymatous rosacea, which results in a bulbous red nose and thickening of the facial skin. Phymatous rosacea is called rhinophyma when it involves the nose. The last variant of rosacea is ocular rosacea, which is on the eyes and causes them to become irritated and bloodshot.

What Causes Rosacea?

The exact cause of rosacea is unknown, but there are some factors that increase chances of developing rosacea including being a woman from 30 to 60 years old, having fair skin and freckles, a family history of rosacea, an overactive immune system, and consuming alcohol.

How to Reduce Rosacea Flare Ups

Although rosacea is a permanent chronic skin condition, there are things you can do to prevent your flare ups from getting worse. The following tips can help reduce the effects of rosacea:

  • Avoid spicy foods and alcohol use
  • Eliminate as much stress as you can
  • Apply SPF 30 sunscreen daily and wear a hat to cover your face
  • Avoid getting overheated
  • Use rosacea recommended skin products
  • Limit drinking hot beverages

Following these tips can help you have less severe flare ups and keep your skin calmer.

Treatment for Rosacea

IPL Photofacial

IPL or Intense Pulsed Light, is a gentle non-invasive treatment that requires little downtime. It works by sending light through the skin to target red, or darker colors in and underneath the skin, without harming the surrounding skin. Because it is gentle, it may take several sessions to permanently remove broken capillaries.

Fotona Laser Treatment

Dr. Tantawi uses the long-pulse Nd:YAG laser because it offers the perfect solution for treating vascular lesions: the broken capillaries underneath the redness of rosacea. Fotona’s long-pulse Nd:YAG lasers can penetrate to a depth of 5-6 mm into the skin, allowing for highly effective treatments. The light in the laser produces energy which is targeted to the blood in the vein. It heats the vein walls and destroys them. It also targets the system that feeds the vein which ensures long term results in the treatment. The body’s immune system clears away the dead tissue.
