What Causes Dark Circles Under the Eyes?

So what’s the reason your eyes are looking a little sallow? The skin under your eyes is very thin, which means any extra fluid or blood can show through. Dark circles sometimes look purple or blue because of all the tiny broken capillaries just below the skin.

As you get older, your skin gets thinner and you begin to lose volume, which can lead to a hollow groove under your eyes. Fat can also begin to settle in this groove causing dark circles with bags under the eyes. When light reflects on your face this hollow groove can be accentuated. Also, aging brings about collagen loss, making it hard for that area to retain moisture. Genetics can play into whether or not you have dark circles under your eyes too – some people are just more prone to them than others .

Treatment for Dark Circles Under The Eyes

At your consultation, you and Dr. Tantawi will come up with the best treatment plan for your individual needs. Below are the treatment options available at Beauty Refined:

Topical Eye Creams

If the dark circles under your eyes are not too severe, you may be able to address them with a topical eye cream. Sometimes, lack of sleep or temporary stress can cause your eyes to not look their best. At Beauty Refined our professional staff can suggest an eye cream for you that can help with dark circles and puffiness.

Dermal Fillers

For Aging eyes, dermal fillers can now get rid of dark circles and bags under the eyes. By filling in the hollow space under the eyes, bags disappear and light isn’t reflected from the under eye area as much. This creates a lighter reflection so the darkness isn’t as noticeable.

Dr. Tantawi uses Voluma, Versa and Restylane to fill in the volume under the eyes. All of these dermal fillers contain lidocaine so the procedure is relatively painless, and it can last up to 6 years.

Blepharoplasty Procedure

Surgery on the eyelids lasts from 1-2 hours and can be divided into two parts:

Blepharoplasty, is done to remove excess skin and soft tissue of the upper or lower eyelid for enhancing the look of your eyes, or for correcting a cosmetic deformity, It is also done for ptosis repair, if there is significant eyelid drooping, requiring reconstruction of the eyelid muscle.

Blepharoplasty is done under general or local anesthesia. Incisions are made inside the natural skin folds of the upper and lower eyelids, and sometimes along the lash line. The excess tissue is removed, and then the incision is closed with small absorbable sutures. Ptosis repair, if needed, is performed through an incision made along the natural crease of the upper eyelid. The levator muscle is then repositioned by stitching it to the tarsus connective tissue in the eyelid. This enables you to see better and makes the eyelid more appealing.

During blepharoplasty, the lower eyelids may be treated with laser resurfacing to remove excess fat deposits, which can contribute to puffy bags under the eyes (blepharoptosis), and enhance results. The surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure. It may be combined with other facial cosmetic procedures, such as those that improve the appearance of the lower eyelids or face. Dr. Tantawi performs all eyelid procedures, to give you the most natural looking results possible.
