What Causes Jowls?
As you age collagen production in the body can begin decreasing at the beginning of your thirties. Loss of collagen fiber affects the elasticity and suppleness of the skin. Exposure to damaging UV rays from the sun can also break down collagen in your skin. As you get even older, in your late forties and fifties, you begin to lose the fat and volume in your face which support the structure. Together these two factors can cause you to have jowls.
The best line of defense is to follow these tips to keep skin youthful for as long as you can:
- Avoid Smoking
- Always wear a sunscreen when you’re outdoors
- Cleanse and moisturize your face daily
- Stay hydrated by drinking enough water
- Cut down or avoid alcohol consumption
- Exercise at least 3 times a week
Having a healthy lifestyle is the best prevention, and greatest asset for having beautiful skin.
Treatments for Jowls
At Beauty Refined Dr. Tantawi takes your aesthetic goals and desires seriously. He has the most advanced products and technology available today, to treat facial wrinkles and jowls. His precision and attention to detail result in the best outcome possible for you.
Below are the procedures available for treating jowls:
Laser Skin Resurfacing
For early jowl formation laser skin resurfacing is the most effective. It tightens the skin and stimulates your body to produce its own collagen. It also treats wrinkles, age spots and large pores.
The use of lasers is a popular treatment in cosmetic procedures, because it’s a form of light therapy. A laser emits a certain wavelength of light that interacts with the molecules inside cells. When this interaction occurs, it stimulates new collagen production and removes dead skin cells from the surface of your skin. This leaves you with healthier,younger-looking skin. Fractional resurfacing is done with an ablative or nonablative laser. Sometimes both may be used.
Ablative Laser
An ablative resurfacing laser is called a wounding laser. It removes a thin layer of surface skin and heats up the lower dermis, which stimulates the growth of new collagen. As the surface skin heals the area becomes smoother and tighter.
Non Ablative Laser
The non ablative laser is non wounding and stimulates the growth of collagen. It is less invasive and over time, or repeated treatments, it improves the tone and texture of your skin.
All laser resurfacing procedures are done in our Beauty Refined clinic. It will take anywhere from 25 minutes to 2 hours for your treatment, depending upon the size of the area the laser is used on.
The area will be cleansed, and prepared for the procedure. Smaller areas will be numbed with a local anesthetic. For a full face or larger areas, general anesthesia or an IV drip sedation method, may be used to ensure your comfort. You may be given something to cover your eyes so the light from the laser doesn’t damage your eyesight.
Dr. Tantawi will then target the area with the laser and pass the laser over the area in an even motion. The laser will emit very quick light pulses which go into the deeper layers of your skin and exfoliate the top layers. After the laser treatment Dr. Tantawi will apply a special moisturizer and dressing to your skin.
The first few days you will experience redness and swelling, something like having a mild sunburn. Dr. Tanawai will give you explicit instructions on how to care for your face or the area treated. It’s important to keep skin clean and moisturized with the products Dr. Tantawi gives you to care for the area. After 5-7 days redness will fade and your skin will begin to peel. You will be required to use sunscreen daily on the area to protect the new skin from sunburn.Your skin will continue to rejuvenate and it may take up to several months for the transformation to be complete.
Lower Rhytidectomy
If you have jowls that cannot be improved with laser resurfacing, surgery will be necessary. A lower rhytidectomyf can take years off of your face and lasts for 10 years or more. With a lower rhytidectomy the focus is on the bottom third of your face, such as neck and jowls.
Traditional Neck Lift
With a traditional neck lift Dr. Tantawi will make an incision behind your ear down to the crease in your neck and around to the back of your hairline. Fat may be sculpted or moved from the jowls and neck. Liposuction may be done in this area depending upon the level of fat in that area. He will then reposition the tissue and tighten the neck muscle (platysma muscle). Skin is then draped over the incision line and excess skin is trimmed away. Sometimes he will make a small incision at the bottom of your chin and liposuction is done to repair the muscle. He will finish using skin adhesive and sutures to close your incisions.
Limited Neck Lift
With a limited neck lift, Dr. Tantawi will make small incisions behind your ears and one under your chin, Liposuction is done and your neck muscle is tightened. He will then close the incisions using skin adhesive or sutures. Dr. Tantawi has made it his specialty to perfect this procedure so that there is very minimal or no visible scarring.
Neck Lift Recovery
You will want to make sure you have extra help at home to assist you after surgery. You can expect bruising and swelling which will reside within two weeks to a month. You should be able to return to work within 7 days and resume normal activities a short time after that. .
